The Scale of the Challenge
Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) are the most common type of special educational need in the UK. Around 10% of all children have some form of SLCN, and in some areas this figure is significantly higher. For SENCOs, this means that supporting communication is central to the role.
5 Practical Strategies for SENCOs
1. Build a Communication-Friendly School Environment
A communication-friendly environment reduces barriers for all children, not just those with identified needs. This includes clear visual timetables, reduced clutter, good acoustics, and a culture where all forms of communication are valued.
2. Ensure Early and Accurate Identification
Many children with SLCN are not identified until they start struggling academically. Work with class teachers to look for early signs: difficulty following instructions, limited vocabulary, social communication challenges, or behaviour that might mask an underlying communication difficulty.
3. Collaborate Closely with Speech and Language Therapists
Where a child has access to NHS or private SLT support, SENCOs can maximise impact by ensuring recommendations are embedded into the school day — not just delivered in isolated therapy sessions. Regular communication between the SENCO, class teacher, and therapist is essential.
4. Support EHCPs with Specific, Measurable Targets
When writing or reviewing EHCPs, ensure that speech and language targets are specific and measurable. Vague targets like “improve communication” are difficult to evidence. Work with your SLT to write targets that can be tracked over time.
5. Provide Training for All Staff
Communication is everyone’s responsibility. Whole-school training on SLCN — including how to adapt language, use visual supports, and identify children who may be struggling — can transform outcomes across a school.
